This task card set is ideal for reviewing and practicing specific reading comprehension skills. Included are 20 reading task cards that focus primarily on THEME and AUTHOR’S PURPOSE. These task cards vary in reading levels and difficulty and can be used in 3rd–6th grades. Both fiction and nonfiction texts are included.
Each card contains a short passage, a mix of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and/or graphic organizers to fill in. Task cards are half a page and should be printed double-sided, with the passage on one side and the tasks (questions) on the back. Vocabulary knowledge is a direct link to reading comprehension. This vocabulary study provides vocabulary activities for words that appear in the novel Zane and the Hurricane by Rodman Philbrick.
This resource includes:
Vocabulary Study
Chapters 1-5: match word to definition & fill in the blank sentences
Chapter 6-10: crossword puzzle
Chapters 11–15: Use the context clues in quotes from the story to determine word meanings, then draw pictures to represent each word.
Chapters 16-20: determine which word does not relate to the others and then explain how the remaining words are related
Chapters 21-25: The task varies for each word (e.g. antonyms, synonyms, complete the sentences, name something, etc.)

This print and go resource is the perfect addition to a novel study on, Zane and the Hurricane, by Rodman Philbrick. This resource includes student handouts for 4 different themes from the novel. Each handout includes a brief description of the theme and explains how the theme connects to the novel. Questions are also included to help guide students in analyzing their theme.
Students will answer theme-related questions using themes present in the novel, Zane and the Hurricane. This is a great activity to split the class into groups and have each group work on a different theme. Some themes are more difficult, be sure to preview the questions to differentiate for your students.

Vocabulary Presentation (8 pages) - Present these pages to the class to teach the vocabulary words that students might be unfamiliar with. A definition and an image are included.

Need More Specific Ideas?
Task cards can be cut, laminated and put onto large binder rings. Give each student, partner pair, or group a set of cards. You can divide up the cards or make multiple sets depending on how many task cards you want on each ring.
Keep the task cards loose and pass out the cards to students, pairs, or groups. You can differentiate the questions the students receive based on their levels.
Give students choices on which task cards they will complete. For example, pick 50 out of the 76 cards to complete by the end of the novel or have students complete the even or odd numbered cards.

This compare & contrast, cause & effect, and problem & solution task card set is ideal for review, test prep, and continued practice of specific reading comprehension skills. Included are 30 reading task cards that focus primarily on COMPARE & CONTRAST, CAUSE & EFFECT, and PROBLEM & SOLUTION. These task cards vary in reading levels and difficulty and can be used in 3rd–6th grades. Both fiction and nonfiction texts are included.
Each card contains a short passage, a mix of multiple-choice questions, short-answer questions, and/or graphic organizers to fill in. Task cards are half a page and should be printed double-sided, with the passage on one side and the tasks (questions) on the back. Student response sheets are included if you don’t want students to write on the actual task cards.
